Creative Practice #5: Protecting the Whole

Good ideas can ruin a project.

Not because they’re bad, but because they pull in the wrong direction. In advertising, a campaign can have strong individual executions across TV, digital, and social, and still feel like it was made by three different teams.

When it works, the campaign just feels intentional. When it doesn’t, something feels off, even if each individual piece is well-made. The failure mode is almost never a bad idea, but a collection of good ideas that got too comfortable around each other.

Earlier in this series, I wrote about taste: the discipline of sensing whether a choice strengthens the whole or distracts from it. Cohesion is what happens when you apply that discipline not just to individual decisions, but to everything at once.

Rick Rubin, the music producer whose work spans decades and genres, writes in The Creative Act: A Way of Being that a piece eventually begins to reveal its center. The early phase is expansive – you’re gathering, exploring, generating. But eventually an emotional logic emerges that starts to feel non-negotiable, and the work changes. You’re no longer building. You’re protecting.

The same principle applies in film. No Country for Old Men (2007) holds an almost uncomfortable stillness through the pacing, the sparse dialogue, even the way scenes end without resolution. Every element reinforces the same idea: that violence is arbitrary, and order is an illusion. Take one element out of register and the whole thing collapses.

Cohesion is less a creative skill than a leadership one. It’s knowing which ideas, even strong ones, pull the work in the wrong direction. The question is never just is this good? but does this belong here?

Restraint is about cutting what you love. Cohesion is about knowing why.

The center of the work is worth more than any individual moment. The campaign that feels like a campaign. The film that feels like one film. Someone had to hold it together.
